WordPress got a facelift!

With Gutenberg, a new editor by WordPress, you’ll experience a whole new way of editing and creating pages and posts without HTML know-how.

So what is Gutenberg?

Named after Johannes Gutenberg, a German who invented the printing press, WordPress has a totally new look that allows you to create rich page layouts easily without the need of HTML expertise.

Matt Mullenweg, founder of WordPress says “The editor will create a new page- and post-building experience that makes writing rich posts effortless. It utilizes “blocks” to for what today might take shortcodes, custom HTML, or “mystery meat” embed discovery”.

A new experience?

1. Create content differently
Gutenberg introduces the concept of using blocks in editor. Earlier, content used to be placed as a single big HTML file with custom post types, short codes, embeds and widgets that made it complex, however with this new block concept you can define specifications per block. Tons of blocks are available including paragraph, lists, quotes, codes, images, heading, short codes, columns, buttons and widgets. You can set layouts and settings for each blocks. These blocks are reusable.

2. Make publications simple and natural
The publication process using this block-based post editor is kept simple and natural with an aim to offer authors ease of writing. Each time you press “Enter”, Gutenberg will automatically create a new block called “Paragraph”. Later when you format your content, you can select any sentence and convert it into sub heading, quotes etc. The text formatting is supportive to all keyboard shortcuts. You can use Ctrl + I to intalicize text and Ctrl+Alt+T to insert a new block, for example.

3. Requires almost no technical expertise
Hooray! You don’t need to know all the HTMl tags to format your content. With the use of block based formatting in Gutenberg editor, you can now create rich post and page layouts.

With tons of blocks and over 30 embeds, Gutenberg extends the power of formatting a text to create rich posts and page layouts. Each block used can be reused saving much of time in editing.

5. Theme and plugin compatibility assured
The WordPress community is releasing themes and plugins daily that are compatible to Gutenberg making it easy for your website to swiftly adapt to the new trend of block based page building.

6. Gutenberg is the new editor to stay
Gutenberg is now the default editor you will get in the WordPress package. In case you need to switch back to the old editor you will have to install it separately. The old editor is called Classic Editor.

7. Don’t worry about your old posts and pages
The block concept is available for all new posts going forward. Content already on your website will remain as is. Existing posts can be converted to blocks by using “Convert to Blocks” functionality on the editor page.
