Website Design Trends

The upheaval of the Coronavirus pandemic has pushed us into the digital world even more than ever before. Web design is an ever-growing industry that is a perfect blend between creativity and technology.

A good website is aesthetically pleasing, user-friendly, conveys the brand persona, and most importantly: converts! Our Atlas SoftWeb experts give us their forecast for the top website design trends 2021, let’s have a look:

1. Organic design

Organic design takes its inspiration from nature and the world around us. This trend is influenced by sustainability and environmentalism evoking the feeling of being immersed in mother nature.

It uses neutral colors like soft browns, beiges, whites, and greys along with faded pink, blues, and greens intoned with the environment’s palette, which can be paired with an occasional pop of bright colors.

Organic shapes and imperfect linework elucidates an elemental feel to the site. Botanical designs are also incorporated, featuring bold but muted tones.

Paper, twine, and wood-based patterns are used as natural textures to give an earthier, handmade feel to the website.

Organic design was one of the biggest web design trends for 2020 and this trend will continue to be popular.

2. Retro

Retro is a term for a culturally outdated, old-fashioned, trend from the past that’s come into style again. Generally, vintage from the last 2 to 3 decades is considered retro.

Concepts borrowed from a few decades ago get made into hot new trends again that invoke a sense of nostalgia for the 90’s kids and a sense of curiosity for the younger generation.

Designers use iconic, age-defining everyday objects, quirky layouts, textures, and patterns to paint imagery of the throwback decades like floppy disks, vintage stamps, dial-up modems, etc. Retro fonts with vibrant colors are used to embody a retro touch.

Mixing contemporary style with early 2000’s style to create a modern retro style that is fresh and nostalgic at the same time can work wonders for the aesthetic of your website.

3. Dark mode

The white background was considered the only canvas to creatively express a brand’s vision on a website. However, website design companies have come to love the dark mode in 2020 because of its implementation by large brands like Apple, Google, Hublot, and even social media like Instagram, Facebook, etc.

This low-light user interface utilizes dark colors like black or shades of grey as primary background color allowing designers to use creative elements like pastels and neons to stand out.

Furthermore, studies show the dark mode helps preserve our treasured battery life and puts less strain on our eyes improving vision by reducing blue light exposure especially during low-light or nighttime situations.

Most websites provide a dark mode toggle to allow users an option to easily customize their experience. It’s a sleek and chic way to your website apart.

4. Illustrations

We are seeing illustrations everywhere this year. With the popularity of digital art, it’s getting easier and easier for designers to implement old-school styles into new web designs. Integrating hand-drawn elements adds an authentic touch to your website. Luxury brands like Gucci are getting behind this fresh website design idea

The modern retro aesthetic of the trend gives a welcoming vibe. Illustrations include abstract composition, odd bodies, bright and bold color palette, 3D illustrations, and as there always were hand-drawn sketches.

This trend brings an element of storytelling to your website, speaking directly to the visitor, painting imagery that just words alone can’t achieve. Illustration can be used to represent diverse characters. This can help portray your brand image and persona effectively.

It’s important to hire website designers that understand your vision for the illustrations you want on your website so that your site communicates the right message to the visitor.

5. Collage

Traditionally collage is sticking paper cut-outs onto a new surface to create a whole new art. This is another old-school art & crafts trend adapted into the technology of today to create a phenomenal design.

We can thank the resurgence of collage to the social media craze of mood boards. Collage inspires and expresses the vision in your head that’s hard to put down in words through a collection of photos brought together to tell a story.

Mixed mediums like photos, illustrations, graphics, digital brush strokes, and even animated collages with funky transitions are used to capitalize on the social channels prioritizing video content. A collage makes your website unique and creatively sets you apart.

6. Seamless surrealism

This technique is characterized by using flamboyant colors, textures, and unusual backgrounds to create jarring, fantastical expressions to represent the abstract and artistic mind of the creator.

This style allows the audience to interpret the design with a mixture of curiosity and imagination as the art doesn’t conform to the conventional sense. Defining characteristics of surrealism include asymmetry, juxtaposition, and metaphorical qualities.

Surrealism can be taken to the next level when tastefully merged with illustration to create out-of-the-world imagery that’ll stick with you long after you see it. Evoke a transcendent experience in your audience.

Perhaps the best implementation of seamless surrealism can be seen in this example by Gucci.

7. Minimalism

Minimalism will always be the core of modern web design. It’s less of a style and more a principle that focuses on functionality and simplicity. Components of minimalism include the absolute essential elements- like clean texts, basic shapes, limited color palette, and loads of empty spaces.

Minimalism doesn’t have to be black and white, using colors and implementing a monochrome palette can do wonders for your site while keeping it user-friendly.

Some great examples of minimalist websites that highlight the product while using a more colorful palette and motion are The Garden Society and Notorious Nooch Co.  Make a website that adds to user experience by using minimalism to ensure the aesthetics of your site harmonizes visually.

8. 3D & Geometric design

Geometric patterns are commonly seen in modern web design. These include polygons, diamonds, rectangles, triangles, and rhombus as the classic flat shapes typically used.

However, adding 3D elements, floating objects, and purposefully visible gridlines can elevate your typical geometrical design into a website with an unparalleled futuristic look.

Use suspended motion with rotating movements to create a surreal motion blend that captivates the audience. This adds another dimension to your website. Structural elements like grids and borders can create a simple but memorable experience.

3D element ideas include- structures, sliced patterns, flipbook animation, timeline navigation, 3D text popup, etc.

9. Anti-design

Spurred on by the resurgence of Brutalism, this web design trend is unapologetic, raw, and controversial. It delves heavily into experimentation by using asymmetry, distortion, exaggeration, and chaotic elements that traditionally may be labeled “ugly”. Because of its out-there style, this trend may not be for everyone and every brand image.

It can’t be denied despite this that anti-design is an effective tool for the websites that have implemented it. Some websites that have implemented this design beautifully and uniquely are XXIX and Playtype

Breaking the rules can make a memorable website. However, it’s imperative to ensure your website is still simple, functional, and user-friendly.

10. Functionality, Inclusivity, and Accessibility

Perhaps the most straightforward web design option out there. Factoring in the needs of people with disabilities by making a highly user-friendly website any user can maneuver creates a positive and effective online experience.

Designers create inclusive and accessible through the following ways:

  • Create strong contrast between text and background
  • Using functional alt texts for images
  • Use easy-to-use jargon-free, and straightforward copies
  • Using labels and instructions
  • Large typography

Not only does is this design good for customer experience but it increases conversions, extends your audience reach, and boosts your SEO to new heights. Simple is the way to go.
