Magento 1 End of Life: What Store Owners Need to Know
Back in September 2019, Magento Commerce had tweeted saying “We are committed to our #Magento 1 merchants through June 2020, ensuring their sites are secure and compliant.” As we begin May 2020, the big question is are you ready?
Irrespective of the software being a word processing application or an ecommerce system, staying updated with your software is important and mandatory. Each updated version has its own set of new features, better user interface and tweaks that eliminate the limitations of its previous version. Magento 2 has also come up with a slew of features and add-ons. That’s not all, it’s strong community support has helped the system extend even more with tons of fabulous and powerful magento extensions.
What does Magento 2 Upgradation mean to you?
If you are an ecommerce store owner and have used Magento 1 as your software then it is important for you to make a switch to Magento 2. Magento 1 will have end of life (EOL) on June 30, 2020. As of now, the software is supported and depending on your version, software support may include both quality fixes and security patches. For Magento 1 Open Source (Formerly known as community) , software security patches are being provided through June 2020 to ensure those sites remain secure and compliant.
This means that if you decide to continue post the EOL of M1, your business could be vulnerable to security breaches. Moreover, you will not comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).These are important security compliance for your ecommerce store must follow to ensure a safe online financial transaction.
As the life cycle of M1 nears to an end, there is no more wait period. You must ACT NOW, and safeguard your online store against all hackers and security breaches.
The current Community Edition (CE) versions being used include 1.5 to 1.9. Below is a table of the respective end of security and maintenance dates.
|VERSION||RELEASE DATE||END OF BUG-FIX MAINTENANCE DATE||END OF SECURITY MAINTENANCE DATE|
|CE 1.5||Feb 2011||Feb 2012||Jun 2020|
|CE 1.6||Aug 2011||Aug 2012||Jun 2020|
|CE 1.7||Apr 2012||Apr 2013||Jun 2020|
|CE 1.8||Sep 2013||Sep 2014||Jun 2020|
|CE 1.9||May 2014||May 2015||Jun 2020|
How to know your current Magento version?
It’s quick and easy. Login into the Magento Admin and scroll down to the bottom of the page. The current version of the magento that your website is running will be shown at the center of the footer.
What you need to do upgrade to Magento 2?
Upgrading to Magento 2 is not that easy as claimed, more so if you have a medium to large store to migrate. There are lot of data migration to be undertaken including product inventory, sales order, shipping details, customer database and it also includes upgrading all the existing extensions to a version supportive to Magento 2. Being an entrepreneur owning an online store, you may not be that tech savvy to do it on your own. We recommend you to hire a Magento expert to upgrade your ecommerce store from Magento1 to Magento2.
If you are still at Magento 2, then you have two options to consider before June 30, 2020:
- Upgrade to Magento 2: This should be your first choice and it will reap its fruits in long run. Considering the EOL, you will have to rush through the migration services and would need an expert ecommerce development team to do this for you. On an average, a medium to large webstore needs about 4 months to year and even more for migration and it depends on the database and its mappings, extensions used and the customizations done on the website. Since we just have 2 more months to go, you will need to be quick. A smart ecommerce developer could get you moving on Magento 2 by going live in a phased manner.
- Shift to another platform: If you do not wish to go through this hassle and are considering to give up on your current Magento 1 website (which we do not recommed) then you can consider switching to alternative ecommerce platforms. We do recommend Shopify and WordPress based WooCommerce based ecommerce store development. They have their pros and cons but our developers have loved working on them as much as with Magento.
There is also an interim / temporary solution we have called temporary fallback option. Speak to our ecommerce experts. This will help you buy time till December 31, 2020 in making your shift to Magento 2.
